Yola Çıkarken -- Fikret Kızılok

Merhabalar! I have finished translating all of the songs on Fikret Kızılok´s "Devrimcinin Güncesi." Of the last four I worked on, three were fairly short and straightforward (or at least they seemed straightforward -- I am never quite sure). But the fourth was quite long, and it seemed to be one of the most difficult I had worked on. This song was "Yola Çıkarken." I am posting it here for your help and comments.

I think the words are very interesting, because they show Atatürk as a human being, with ambition but also doubts, with humility, gratitude and humor. I especially like the last two lines. They show that he may have surprised even himself. It can give us all hope in our own small endeavors, I think.

İşte çevirim:

Yola çıkarken apotlerimi koparmıştım. Artık rütbesiz bir er bile değildim. -- In setting off, I had broken off my epaulets. Now I was not even a soldier without rank.

-- Soldiers know well what the chain of command and control is. Now I was one of the people.

Tek gücüm ihtilalci olmamdı. Boynumuzda idam fermanı bulunan bir ihtilalci. -- My one strength was not being a revolutionary. A revolutionary who is an execution order on our necks.

Bütün evraklar, yazışmalar resmi olarak yaverimdeydi. -- My aide had all of the documents and correspondence, as was official.

-- But he said "I" as he also was resigning. "Now I cannot give you these documents. What will happen?"

Bütün bunları bir başka komutana vermeli. Önce kendimi toparlayamadım. -- He must give all of these to another commander. At first I couldn´t pull myself together.

-- I was a revolutionary without rank. It was right, but I had been left dumbstruck, saying, does this position have a place in the operation?

Ertesi gün odaya Karabekir Paşa geldi. İki adım uzakta topuklarından gelen bir selam verdi. -- The next day Karabekir Paşa came to the room. Two steps away, he immediately gave a greeting.

Ve öylece devam etti. “Komutanda bulunan herkesin size saygılarını arz ediyoruz. -- And he continued that way. "We must make a show of everyone in your command having respect for you.

İhtilalin doğal komutanı sizsiniz. Emrinizdeyiz.” Kucaklaştık. -- "The revolution´s natural commander is you. We are under your command." We embraced.

-- To become part of affairs that are the uppermost ones of our time could be frustrating.

Kısa zamanda parlak başarılar elde edebilirdik ama sınırları genişletmek istemiyordum. -- In a short time we could achieve brilliant successes, but I did not want to expand the borders.

-- While establishing a healthy state within national borders, I had to leave behind a political system that would also remain strong after me.

Misakı Milli. Arkadaşlarla bazen tartışırdık. Bazıları eski sınırlara kovuşmak isterlerdi. -- The National Pact. Sometimes we disagree with friends. They wanted to drive some people to the borders.

Hatta daha ötesine. Oysa ben sömürgeciliğin, yayılmacılığın er geç hüsranla sona ereceğini biliyordum. -- Even beyond, to the other side. However, I knew that colonialism and diffusionism would end sooner or later in defeat.

Amaçlarıma adım adım gitmeliydim. Halkıma ters gelecek düşünceleri defalarca düşünmeliydim. -- I had to go step by step to my goals. I had to think again and again the thoughts that would seem wrong to my people.

-- I had to consult, but when I made a decision, I also must never turn back.

Erzurum’a varınca ilk hedefim kongreyi toplamaktı. Bu Anadolu ihtilalin meclisi olacaktı. -- When I arrived in Erzurum, my first goal was to convene the congress. This would be the Anatolia revolution´s assembly.

Ateş orada yakılacak. Sabahlara kadar çalışırdık. -- The fire was lit there. We worked into the mornings.

Herşeyi adım adım planlamak gerekiyordu. -- It was necessary to plan everything step by step.

Günlükleri yazmaktan yorulunca Mazhar’a yazdırırdım. -- When I was tired from writing journals, I would have Mazhar write.

Sigaramın acı nefesi tatlı hayalleri gerçekleştirecekti. -- The bitter drag of my cigarette would make sweet dreams come true.

Bu sırları şimdilik sakla ve yaz. Padişah ve hanedan yok olacak ve Cumhuriyet kurulacak. -- For the time being, hide these secrets and write. The sultan and the dynasty will disappear, and the Republic will be founded.

Yaz. Fes kalkacak. Yaz. Uygar milletler gibi şapka olacak. -- Write. The fez will be taken off. As in civilized nations, the brimmed hat will be accepted.

Bazen bunlar fazla hayal değil mi derdi. Yaz derdim, devam et. -- Sometimes he would say, these are big dreams, aren´t they? Write, I would say, continue.

Latin harfleri olacak. Yaz. Kadınlara özgürlük, seçme seçilme hakkı. -- Latin letters will be accepted. Freedom for women, and the right to elect and be elected.

Seneler sonra ikimiz de yazdıklarımızı unutmamıştık. -- Years later neither of us had forgotten the things we had written.

-- When Mazhar and I made the hat revolution a reality, there was also a brimmed hat on the head of the president of religious affairs.

Göz göze gelmiştik. Mazhar demiştim. Kaçıncı sayfada kaldık? -- We had looked at each other. Mazhar, I had said, what page did we stop on?

Look OK. Note the following:

Tek gücüm ihtilalci olmamdı. Boynumuzda idam fermanı bulunan bir ihtilalci. -- My one strength was not being a revolutionary. A revolutionary who is an execution order on our necks.

Being a revolutionary was my only (or unique) strength.

I wondered what that "m" was in "olmamdı." I guess this is like the past tense of a gerund? "My being a revolutionary was my only strength." ... Thank you for your help!

-m = my (first sing. person possessive suffix)

olma = being

olma-m = my being (yes it is the possessive of the gerund of "ol-mak")
