Sigara içer misiniz?

do you smoke?

Hayır, teşekkür ederim, içmiyorum

No thank you , I do not smoke

Why do you use içmek  which can be used for drinking ,eating etc  instead of using the negative of sigara

or why not answer.... I do not take

also if I translate the question do you smoke  using içer it would be defined as do you comprise cigarette  which means something different altogether.

Içmek is used for both drinking and smoking. Yes, it´s a bit surprsing.

Sigara is a noun.

içmiyorum - I don´t smoke

Sigara içmiyorum - I don´t smoke cigarettes

I think you could answer, but I´m not positive:

istemiyorum - I don´t want

Sigara almam - I don´t take cigarettes

içermek - to comprise

you are right içer could also mean an imperative for comprise/include

for smoking içer is he/she smokes

literal translation for do you comprise cigarettes would be: Sigara içerir misiniz?

I don´t really get your point. Words can´t have meanings without a context, and this applies to every language.For example, English has a lot of homophones;would any English speaker ever confuse eight with ate, sea with see or die with dye in any given context? Highly unlikely. Similarly, why would anyone reply, "I don´t drink wine" to the question "Do you smoke?"

to drink: iç(mek)

to comprise (içer)mek

aorist tense of iç(mek): içer

aorist tense of içer(mek): içerir

So there is no possibility of a confusion between them.

If  someone offer you a cigarette, you can say "kullanmıyorum" It means "I dont use". If you are not a smoker you can answer that way.

Just an input

There are other words that you can hear used. Like these:

Sigara kullanmak

Sigara tüttürmek

Sigara tellendirmek

thank you I want to question this further?

There seems to be so many ways to ask a person if they smoke  and they use words that can have double or triple meanings? When answering back do you just use the the same words and make them negative?

Well,

For sigara kullanmak a conversation might go like this;

A : Sigara kullanıyor musunuz?

B : Hayır kullanmıyorum.

For sigara tüttürmek;

A : Hadi birer sigara tüttürelim

B : Teşekkürler ben içmeyeceğim. Dokunuyor bana.

For sigara tellendirmek is generelly used when talking about the event.

Like: Bir sigara tellendirip sokağa çıktım. Which means bir sigara içip sokağa çıktım. But it has a somewhat different meaning including a kind of pleasure that comes after smoking the cigaret.

Or some would ask like this;

A : Gel şöyle manzaraya karşı birer sigara tellendirelim

B : Teşekkür ederim ama ben sigara içmek istemiyorum
