Hello Forum!

My name is Matt, I am English I have been learning Turkish at a snails pace for almost 4 years now.

I have a quick question. My friend is intersted in having a phrase within a tattoo. I was asked to translate it to Turkish. I came up with "hayal etmek, ınanmaktır"

I asked a Turkish friend, to check this for me and he said "it is okay but you can also say" - hayal kurmak, ınanmaktır.

When I asked him the difference between the two, as it´s quite important to get it right, he just said "it´s the same".

Can someone be as detailed as possible regarding the difference in this scenario between kurmak and etmek.

çok teşekkür ederim

Hayal kurmak is the common expression. Hayal etmek is very factual but kurmak will be used in daily talk. Also it should be inanmaktır, with a dotted i in the front.

hayal etmek - to dream of something that is likely to happen

hayal kurmak - to dream of something that is not that much likely to happen

for example for something that turned out to be not as you dreamed to happen, you could say

ben öyle hayal etmemiştim - this is not what I expected it to happen

IOW, hayal etmek is more about the facts, hayal kurmak about stories.
