What does "merhaba" (hello) mean?

Have you ever thought about it? What´s the meaning of "merhaba"?

"Merhaba" in turkish is originally a persian word and it means "may no harm come from me to you."

Alternatives in english: Hello, hi, ciao, howdy etc...
