Hi everybody,
I would like to ask if anybody knows about a good and cheap accomodation in Istanbul, some kind of hostel or a room, just simple but trustful and safe. Somewhere near Taksim. Also something for one night at Otogari, because I come about at ten in the evening, so it could be difficult to travel then..

We've been to Cordial house! (www.cordialhouse.com) It's really great! But it's in Sultanahmet.. not really close to Taksim. But you can get a cab, which will cost you around 15YTL during the night (well.. we paid that much at 5 in the morning ).. Cordial House is really great, the people are soo friendly, and it feels like you're in a student apartment!

(If you don't mind toilets without a lock and a lot of different colors then you'll love this place!)

First time I went to Istanbul I stayed in Bahaus Hostel
As it says, it's a hostel, you share rooms with bunkbeds, there is only 1 bathroom on every floor, but the place was clean, the atmosphere was great, you can have nice meals there if you want, and it's cheap.

I took the dorm, shared that room with 3 other girls. And yes, I felt very safe there. I did have those small locks to put on my luggage though. And if you want you can rent a locker as well.
Don't expect too much of that dorm, it is really basic But when your budget is limited, that place is good, because when you go to Istanbul the intention is not to stay in your room the whole day, is it?
One disadvantage for me was the location. Sultanahmet is of course beautiful, but there are other areas that are much more exciting and "real". I found Sultanahmet to be quite empty after 9pm. Fortunately the hostel had a nice bar on the upper floor (and of course the terrace during the summer), so there was plenty of things to do there. I met nice people there.

Hi Elisa,

Great! I thought I am the only one who is on budget tour. I thought most people would get the room type. Yes, I wanted to try something new...like dorm bed.

I think you gave good advice here thanks!

As long as it is safe, clean then I think that should be fine. Yes exactly! Who would want to stay in the room all day? All I need is a shelter where I can sleep and rest well before the next day starts again. Yes, I too think Sultanahmet is a nice place to stay in. But after you mentioned that its quite "empty" at night. Maybe I should look for other area.

What do you suggest, if its other area. I agree with you that staying in hostels you get to meet more people which can be fun

I was staying in Sultanahmet for a week, but in a hotel, not a hostel. Elisa is right, finding accommodation closer to Taksim might be better - it's no problem to get to Sultanahmet for sightseeing during a day, and Taksim is definitely a much better place to party at night.

However, if you're still in for Sultanahmet here's a link with some budget hotels offers.

As for Taksim, here's a hotel I stayed in in February - it's not bad and the prices are quite ok.

Have lots of fun there

The thing is (someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I've been looking into it) that there are no hostels except there.. Other areas like Beyoğlu, Taksim, Kadıköy (Asian side) certainly have cheap hotels, but no hostels as far as I know. Of course nothing is holding you from going to other places and take a tram or a taxi back!

I love Büyük Londra Oteli, which is in the Beyoğlu area. It is in the same street as Pera Palas, but way cheaper!!
It's right behind the corner of Istiklal Caddesi and Taksim Square, it's an old hotel, with a past glory but really relaxed and a bit of a bohemian atmosphere, not posh at all.
Have you seen the movie "Gegen die Wand" by the way (TR: "Duvara karşı" - ENG: "Head-On")? Part of that movie was filmed there
