Quoting bod: When should "şimdi" be used and when should "artık" be used? |
şimdi = right at this moment, now
artık = right after this moment, from now on, anymore
Examples:
şimdi git -- go now (at this moment)
artık git -- be gone from now on (it is time you went)
şimdi bilmiyorum -- I don't know (anything about it) right at this moment
artık bilmiyorum -- I don't know it from now on (I thought I knew it but I am not sure anymore)
şimdi göremiyorum -- I cannot see it right at this moment (maybe I can some time later)
artık göremiyorum -- I cannot see it anymore (I saw it a moment ago but I cannot from now on)
şimdi anladım -- I got it now (right now)
artık anladım -- I got it from now on (I just got it and I will always have got it from now on)
şimdi gitmem -- I don't go for now (I may sometimes later)
artık gitmem -- I don't go (there) anymore (I will not go there right after this moment)
etc.

İ would say that 'şimdi' means 'now'
'hemen' is more immidiate
eg
'şimdi gidiyorum' = 'I am going now,( but if there is an urgent matter I can stay a little longer)
'hemen gidiyorum' = I am going right now (implies urgency)
Artık means more like 'from now on' , 'anymore', 'after this'
eg
'artik oraya gitmiyorum' = 'I am not going there again' (maybe a restaurant where the food or service was not good)
'artiık oraya gitme!' = 'don't go there again' ( perhaps parent to child)
'artık her gün daha fazla meyvayı yiyeceğim' = !I am going to start eating a lot more fruit every day'
Artık ben daha fazla çalışacağım!!

Turkcell Süper Lig artık başlasın
(yeah I know this one is a bit dated but it's for language purposes )
Could "artık" be translated here as "finally"?
"Let the Süper lig finally begin (please!)"

şimdi is also used a lot when someone is thinking, in the same way in English we might say Hmmm or we pause a moment.
I don't think artik could be used the same way.
