" Silence is golden. "

It means = The art of conversation is dead.
Silence is better than nonsensical stuff...

Actually that is not quite right. To us it means that silence is a virtue, something to be cherished. I sometimes love silence, therefore to me in those moments "silence is golden".

I always thought it meant not saying something was better than saying something you're better off not saying.

I always thought it meant not saying something was better saying something you're better off not saying.



Maybe it means different things to different people! MAny times I have been told to be quiet lol so perhaps you are right Sonunda

Tereddüt eden kaybeder = He/she who hesitates is lost.

He/she who travels far/much knows much: Not he who lived long knows, but he who traveled much knows. = Çok yaşayan bilmez, çok gezen bilir = Çok gezen çok bilir = Çok okuyan bilmez, çok gezen bilir.

other Turkish proverbs = Literal translation

- Çok mal/ para haramsız, çok laf yalansız olmaz: ıt is impossible to become rich withoutmoney illegitimately acquired, ill-gotten gains, much talks means much lies.
- Ofke ile kalkan zararla oturur = He who gets up (starts up) in anger, sits down with a loss.
- Bilmemek ayip degil, sormamak ayip = It is not disgraceful to ask, it is disgraceful no to ask.
- Ne ekersen, o'nu bicersin= You harvest what you sow.You will reap whatever you sow.
- Doğru söyleyeni dokuz köyden kovarlar : The one who speaks truth would be expelled from nine villages.
- Fala inanma falsız kalma : Don't believe in foretellings but don't stay without them.
- Gülü seven dikenine katlanır : Who loves a rose will endure its thorns.
- Mühür kimde ise Süleyman odur : Whoever has the Seal, he is Solomon [the prophet].
- Papaz her gün pilav yemez : The priest does not eat rice every day.
- Parayla imanın kimde olduğu belli olmaz : It is unclear who has money and who faith.
- Sabır acıdır, meyvesi tatlıdır : Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet.
- Tavşan dağa küsmüş, dağın haberi olmamış : The hare (rabbit) was offended with the mountain, but the mountain did not notice.
- Umut fakirin ekmeğidir : Hope is the bread of the poor.
- Yüzü güzel olanın huyu da güzel olur : Who has a beautiful face has a beautiful character too.
- En iyi karar, verilmiş karardir : The best desicion is a made one.
- Cahile söz anlatmak, deveyi hendekten atlatmaktan zordur : Explaining something to an ignorant person is harder than making a camel jump over a ditch.
- İyi diyelim iyi olsun :Wish well, be well.
-Bir elin nesi var, iki elin sesi var : Two heads are better than one.Even if you know a thousand things, still ask someone who knows.
-Bir tasla iki kus vurmak : Killing two birds with one stone.
-Ates dustugu yeri yakar : An ember burns where it falls.
-Sabrın sonu selametttir : Patience is the key to paradise .
-Yapılan iyilik asla unutulmaz : Good actions are never lost.
-Akıllı isan arkadaşlarını her zaman hatırlar, aptal insan ise yalnızca ihtiyaç duyduğu zaman : A wise man remembers his friends at all times; a fool, only when he has need of them
-Güzel kelimeler demirden kapıyı açar : Tatlı dil yılanı deliğinden çıkarırı : Kind words will unlock an iron door.
-Sana dedikodu yapan, senin hakkında da dedikodu yapar Who gossips to you will gossip about yıou.
-Ağacı kurt, insanı dert yer : It is worms which destroy a tree, it is worry which destroys a human.
--Akılları pazara çıkarmışlar, herkes kendi aklını beğenmiş : They put up minds for sale on the market, everyone liked his own mind. (Variant: Everyone put up his mind for sale on the market, and liked his own mind.)
-Ana gibi yar, vatan gibi diyar olmaz : There is no lover like mothers nor place like homeland.
-Ayıpsız dost arayan dostsuz kalır: A man who seeks a perfect friend, will remain friendless.
-Babası oğluna bir bağ bağışlamış, oğul babaya bir salkım üzüm vermemiş : The father donated a vineyard to his son, the son didn't give a bunch of grapes to the father.
-Bana arkadaşını söyle, sana kim olduğunu söyleyeyim : Tell me who your friend is, and I will tell you who you are.

Çok muhabbet tez ayrılık getirir : insanlarla iyi geçinmek istiyorsanız onlardan uzak ve saygılı durun.
-Çok söz (laf) yalansız, çok para (mal) haramsız olmaz.
