I am now armed with a list of herbs and spices (baharatlar) in Turkish (çok teşekkur. You know who you are).
I have been given a bag of fish and told it is my turn to cook dinner. , I can see what looks suspiciously like eyeballs glaring at me through the frozen bag so i am presuming there is at least one whole fish in there. I am from the UK and therefore a bit delicate wben it comes to eating eyeballs but i'm sure my host and his family will enjoy.

Anyone have any traditional recipes i can use?
They have hardly any spices (i am nipping into carrefours for some when you guys give me some ideas (she says hopefully). I have fish, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, garlic, black pepper, chilli peppers in the kitchen at present.

Someone give me some ideas LÜTFENNNNNNNNNN

Oh and ı cannot reply to my prıvate messages on this pc for some reason......so you will have to get me at sillyyaktr@hotmail.com.

Anyone out there tell me the Turkish words for:
Incense
Spice/Spices
Herb/Herbs

I'd be very grateful. Thanks, sorry for banging on.

Incidentally, the alphabetical list of herbs and spices was so useful i've put on 2 Coeliac message boards for the UK and Bulgaria. VERY useful for us.

Thanks again everyone.

Can ı revert thıs thread back to ıts orıgınal subject? I do love tea and the graceful Turkish glasses BUT i'm more interested at present in the Turkish names for the normal herbs and spices i use around the home.

As a coeliac (Choliak in Turkish) i am not fortunate enough to eat out as most food is dipped, battered or fried in batter, breadcrubs or whatever which i am unable to eat. Therefore my food is quite bland at present.

I'd VERY MUCH like to know the names of the herbs and spices listed. Can anyone out there help me with this??

This is my second time in Turkey now and i wish to take back with me some herbs and spices that i cannot find in Bulgaria. Plus, while i am here i would like to feed my host some dishes from Bulgaria and England.

Is there a list of translated spices and herbs online or would someone be able to make me a list? Particularly for the spices Cumin and Turmeric???

Also, there is a herb in Bulgaria called Chewbrika or Chewbritza, is there a Turkish equivalent of this?

I would love the Turkish names for the following:
Onion
Garlic
Turmeric
Cumin
Oregano
Cardanom
star anise
thyme
parsley
sage
rosemary
marjoram
curry
mustard
saffron

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Can't find this in any phrase books and i'm off to Istanbul for the first time tomorrow........oooooh,i'm so exited.

I've prepared for every eventuality except the most important one!!! d'oh, my diet. I'm a coeliac (hence my nick name on here) and i need gluten/wheat free food in Istanbul.

Can anyone help me translate these phrases?:

"Is there flour in this dish"?

"Can this be prepared without flour"?

"I can eat rice but not with pasta in it"

"do you dip the meat in flour first"?

Teşekkur edırım in advance.

I had to translate the sentences and questions into Turkish:

1) Ali is listening to music

İs Ali listening to music?

2) Benan is cooking food
Benan yiyerek yemek yapmak

Is Benan cooking food?
Benan yemek mi yapiyor?

3) The dog is playing football
Körek futbol oynamak

İs the dog playing football?
Kopek futbol mu oyruyor?

4) Ali is saying "goodbye"
Ali "hoşÃ§akal" söylüyorusun

Is Ali saying "goodbye"?
Ali "hoşÃ§akal" mi diyor?
