Hahah Femme´s link confirms my suspicion about this "day":-

 

"In some celebrations, the day lost its political flavour, and became simply an occasion for men to express their love to the women around them in a way somewhat similar to Mother´s Day and St Valentine´s Day mixed together."

I find the whole thing patronizing and condescending...

Meleðim, those imperialistic westerners will never realise what a carnation and nylon pantyhose meant

 

I recall getting box of chocolates from the principal at the school I worked - there were two lines - one with female teachers waiting to get the chocolates and another one with those who collected them and had to sign to prove it lol
