I´ve been trying to find information regarding Taiho Koki  was a very famous Sumo wrestler who I was told was of Turkic heritage. He was a champion in the 1960s.

The story I was told is that his family were Tartar Turks who took refuge in Japan after WWI.  Now on doing research all I can find is his father was from the Ukraine...which was part of Krim at one time.  Perhaps some of our Turks here may have heard of him.

Guess what, I don´t have the energy or inspiration to look it up for anyone.....

How about Ahmet Ertegun, the founder of Atlantic Records? He certainly had a large contribution to world culture.

Quoting turkaturk

You mean Attila the Hun? Come on...

Marion, if I were you, I would use more official sources.

Take some books or other trustable sources about international organizations like Nobel, Oscar, Red cross, UN etc and pick out the Turkish names.

Also, talk to some history teachers (preferably university professors), search for names in folk songs, check the titles of international economical magazines.

To find the most significant Turkish people I would observe the impact they made on Turkish culture and also the international awareness towards them.

Anyway, very interesting subject, if you need help, just drop me a line! I enjoy researching too much. Some kind of disease I guess.

Good luck!

Google "HunTurk" and see who comes on!..   Hungarians and Turks give ATTILA as a first name for a reason!  http://www.encyclopedia.com/video/frxhFY4ezzo-hun-turk-tatar-mongol-empires.aspx,   Genghiz (english spelling) is popular in Turkey also.

What did Kültigin did for Turkey then? It seems European Huns found a place next to Turkey and Atatürk according to Republic of Turkey, it is symbolised in the presidental pennant together with 15 state of Turks. Possibly Turks thought their ancestry were Huns. Btw hun means public/human in old Turkish, human in Mongolian as well, some says so...

But what did Attia did for Turkey? Why do you think that he was a Turkish leader? I wouldn´t put his name next to Atatürk.

Marion said "Ottomans or Turkish citizens" ...we don´t have to have any arguement about Atilla since he was never an Ottoman or modern Turkish citizen. Otherwise we could also put Noah on the list since the theory is that his arc landed in Turkey, so he lived in Turkey too {#emotions_dlg.wtf} No pre-Ottoman time people

There are also doubts Ottomans being of Turkish origin then, espcially for sultans after early stages of the state .Wink
