Since (beri and dolayı)

The preposition “since” has multiple contexts. One as describing a span a time after something;

“Orhan has been sad since his mother’s accident.”

The other is a similar use to the word “because” as the next clause modifys the first.

“I wanted to go also, since I wanted to get new shoes.” (Although in that context,  “because”  might work better. )

In Turkish, I understand that both “beri” and “dolayı” can mean “since”. Are there different contexts in which to use either? Or can they be interchangeble? Such as in my examples;

“Orhan mutsuz olmuştu, kazadan beri.

Bende gitmek istediğim, yeni ayakkabılar almak istediğim dolayı.

Or is one used for one context only, while the other is for another context? (also how are my sentences?{#emotions_dlg.angel}

"-den/-dan beri" => since (prep/conj) [continuously/intermittently from (the time when)]

Orhan, annesinin kazasından beri mutsuzdu.

"-den/-dan beri" and "-den/-dan bu yana" are interchangeable:

Orhan, annesinin kazasından bu yana mutsuzdu.

-den/-dan dolayı => because (of)

Yeni bir ayakkabı* almak istediğimden dolayı ben de gitmek istedim.

In this type of sentences it is better to use "için":

Yeni bir ayakkabı almak istediğim için ben de gitmek istedim.

*if it is "a pair of shoes" we say "bir çift ayakkabı" and the word "çift" is often dropped: bir ayakkabı.

if it is two or more pairs of shoes we say "ayakkabılar"

Yeni ayakkabılar almak istediğim için ben de gitmek istedim.

Hope it helps.

Thank you ScalpelSmile I understand about the use of "çift" now,  but I had not thought to use it with something like shoes. İt makes sense. So anytime something typically comes in pairs, you can use "çift"? Like shoes or gloves?

Though I had actually not known about "-den/dan bu yana" yet, thanks{#emotions_dlg.bigsmile} Seems like learning about one thing can lead to other sometimes.

bir çift çorap - a pair of socks

bir çift eldiven - a pair of gloves

bu eldivenin çiftini bulamıyorum - I can´t find the pair of this glove

also,

* two animals joined together in work: bir çift at - a pair of horses

* two persons who are married, engaged or dating: evli bir çift - a married pair / mutlu bir çift - a happy pair
