She was from Italy and her favorite thing to say was, "You can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear". This meant that you can't change someone if they are bad..they will always be bad. My husband is Turkish and he has shared some expressions from his culture. For example, when we got married someone in his family wished us to grow old sleeping on the same pillow.
