One of the greatest reformer and statesman of the 19th Century, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan was born in Delhi on October 17, 1817. Sir Syed was an ardent reformer and he wanted to reconcile modern scientific thought with religion by rationalistic interpretations and not by attacking basic belief. He was anxious to push new education. He was in no way communally separatist. Repeatedly he emphasized that religious differences should have no political and national significance. Sir Syed’s vision and his laborious efforts to meet the demands of challenging times are highly commendable. The dark post 1857 era was indeed hopeless and only men like Sir Syed could penetrate through its thick veil to visualize the Nation’s destinies. He rightly believed that the past had its merits and its legacies were valuable but it was the future that a society was called upon to cope with. Sir Syed’s vision and courage withstood all obstructions both from the friends and the foes.
2. It is intereseting to note that from 1858 upto about 1870 nearly all British politicians, authors and administrators unhesitantly blamed muslims for the mutiny of 1857(1-page 18 –The Struggle for Pakistan). But in 1870 change in British opinion was visible. Men like Sir Richard Temple, Sir Jhon Strachey and W. H Gregory came forward to argue that Muslims of India were not disloyal and that the unpleasant past should be forgotton. (2-page 18 –The Struggle for Pakistan). The most powerful single factor which rehablitated the Muslims and recovered fort hem some of thıer lost political and intellectual influence was Sir Syed Ahmed Khan. (3-page 18 –The Struggle for Pakistan).
