We also exchange gifts. We do that on the new year's eve, when clock rings midnight and the year is changing.

It doesn't have to do with big or expensive presents. But there is a prejudice, saying that whatever you do in the first day of the new year, the same you ll be doing for the next of the year as well. So, we give and receive presents, with the hope that similar happy moments we ll keep living whole year. (Hope dies last ha? )

I forgot to mention that I buy presents, even for people that can't be with me that day, but somehow I feel close to them. So, there is usually a big bunch of presents under my christmas tree and an empty wallet in my bag

Yep. Exactly at the beggining of New Year, at 00:00. The only one receiving presents on Christmas too, is my spoilt daughter!

Btw... is my present under your tree already, twinny?

New Year used to be the time to exchange gifts in Scotland as well. Christmas Day was a normal working day until the 1970's.

when i was younger i would usually get one present for my birthday and christmas...how annoying when everyone else got two - one for birthday, one for christmas.

Anyway, gift giving became our tradition in our country. But, for me, there's no need to have occasion to do these things. I for example, i used to give gifts to my family members and friends whenever i travel to make them know that i always remember them wherever i go and whatever i do. I give them things which are the specialties of the place where i had been to.. I also give myself a gift as a reward after doing things which had best results out of my own hard work
