with babies born into muslim families,an elder male member of the family or the imam reads the babys name three times into the ear(right i think)..usually gold is also given to newborns.

Doesn't it mean that if the grandparent does this, that the baby is a muslim? I read that somewhere on the net?

it can be an older male member of the family or an imam..it doesn't have to be a grandfather.

Doesn't it symbolise them welcoming the baby to the Muslim faith though? :-S

yes but they make the choice later in life..islam isn't forced upon people...the choice of whether to be muslim or not can only be done by saying a sentence three times..i won't put it here because i don't think it is needed

İn Muslims Families,it is Sünne 'something taking from our Prophet Mohamed Sav behavior' that they say ALLAH AKBER in the baby's ear 3 times, and the say 'İqama'the prayer the Emam say after Ezan starting Salat in the other ear.
Saying the name of the baby,is a Turkish custom, not Sünne every Muslim family does.
