Yes, shame it has become so commercialised - collect your carrier bag, take off your shoes and carry them around, leave the bag at the door on your way out along with the donation. And it is difficult to appreciate the mosque from the outside, as you get bombarded by carpet sellers etc and those wanting to be your guide, for a small price of course.

sounds like a good story, but dont think its true. I think the real reason is he wanted a camii that rivaled mecca.

Now why did you have to go and let him know you believed silly? I would have enjoyed a healthy argument between you, would have cheered me up tremendously. lol

I think KeithL is right, the architecture of the mosque caused resentment because it wanted to compete with Mecca which was considered to be unholy.

The above legend is one of the legends concerning the building of the blue mosque. The other is that Sultan Ahmet I was the sixth sultan following the conquest of İstanbul.

The mosque in Mecca used to have six minarets, too at the time. One more minaret was built with the mosque in Mecca later.

The Turkish word for gold is “altin”. The architect misunderstood him as “alti”, which means six. While Mehmed Aga was terrified of getting beheaded because of this mistake, the Sultan in fact loved the minarets. Prior to Sultan Ahmet I, no other sultan had had a mosque with 6 minarets. He was the first, which gave him the feeling of power.

as always, my dear roswitha you are a wealth of information.your thirst for knowledge and interest in cultural buildings and practices leave me flabbergasted thank you once again
