Even though there is a typo in the word, couldn't you have guessed that it is Beyoğlu, the part of Istanbul from Karaköy to Taksim? I think you must have spent quite a couple of hours in the neighbourhood..

I think I only visted Sultanahmet and Taksim areas of İstanbul. But I wasn't there long enough to really get my bearings on which area is where - means I will have to return and learn more

If you took the train that circles at Taksim Square, it goes down the hill through beyoglu to galatasaray high school, and then startz going uphill again until it gets to Tunel, which is in Galata. There are several alternative bars in the area near there where the US Consulate used to be. But Beyoglu itself has hundreds of clubs maybe.
