i am working through the turkish language programme on this site and have come across the expression virgul for comma. I have never used this when i have been in a turkish area so how common is it? normally i would say for example on bes bucuk for 15 and a half

Just a guess - the real answer need to come from someone else - but couldn't it be possible that 'virgül' is used for comma between words in a sentence and 'buçuk' with fractions?

But buçuk is an exception, like çeyrek (quarter). Buçuk means "half", but only when talking about numbers and time, otherwise half is "yarım".

you can use "nokta" and "virgül" words when speaking something numeratical if you are confused. For ex;
15,70 gbp = on beş virgül yetmiş sterlin
veya 15.70 gbp = on beş nokta yetmiş sterlin
i am sure everyone can get what you mean.

also, when you talk about time, you can say "saat 13.30 = saat onüç otuz instead of "saat bir buçuk"
but without nokta or virgul this time

this is easier probably.

by the way, buçuk is very common but need practice to know where to use, you can not say "birbuçuk sterlin" or something i guess but you can say "saat bir buçuk " to express 1.30 am ...
you can say " bir buçuk ekmek, bir buçuk gün, birbuçuk saat" and it is very common word in daily use.

you can say " bir buçuk ekmek,

this is strange.. Last year our teacher gave what you said as an example, he told us that we could never use "buçuk ekmek", we should say "yarım ekmek" instead.

bir buçuk: 1 + 0.5 = 1.5
yarım: 0.5 = 0.5

and there is no expression "buçuk ekmek". It must be yarım ekmek. If it is 4.5: you can use buçuk: dört buçuk ekmek
