Is there a difference between oto and araba???
Recently in İstanbul I have seen that oto park and oto galerisi are used. But I also saw a sign saying araba yasak. Are these two words interchangable?
Also, am I right that araba has the additional meaning of a horse drawn cart which oto does not have?

The shortening of word OTOMOBİL to OTO
Otomobil and Araba they are synonymous word
Car ; Araba , Otomobil
Or Araba to Araç
a horse drawn cart its not Otomobil its just a Araba or Araç
And Otomobil must be with engine but Araba or Araç may not be without engine

"araba" is any means of land transportation, with one or more wheels, with an engine or without an engine.
at arabası / kağnı arabası : a horse / ox drawn cart
alışveriş arabası : shopping trolley
el arabası : wheelbarrow
yiyecek / içecek servis arabası : food / drinks trolley / cart
As you can see the above words are all noun modifications. "Araba" and "otomobil" are interchangeble, however "oto" can't replace "araba/sı" in the above noun modifications.

Çok sağol.
So there would be nothing wrong with araba park or araba galerisi? But I assume they would be uncommon......

Yes, there would be nothing wrong with "araba parkı" (gets "-ı") or "araba galerisi", and yes they are uncommon

Oh dear - it seems every answer gives rise to another question!!!
Why is it araba parkı but oto park (without the ı)

I guess it should be "oto parkı" though. Oto is a noun describing "park". And why would it be "oto galerisi" but not "oto parkı"..?

I think I found it..
According to TDK otopark is written in one word. So that would explain it all...
