My Turkish is less than level 1. Just starting out and its many years since I last studied, and I will have to teach myself as there is no school available within a days drive of my home, and I can only speak with a turkish language speaker about once a week. What has been your most successful method of learning. eg Do you choose a list of nouns and learn 5 a day? do the vocab tests?, list then write them yourself. All advice welcome.
Thanks.

I try and learn at least 10 random words a day. Before I started I choose about 100 words out of the dictionary that we use a lot. Now I just tick them off when I know I have learnt them. And now I just add words to my list that I see in turkish a lot and dont know what they mean. Everyone learns in different ways though, but this is my method of choosing words.
Good Luck xx

Get hold of a good Turkish Language book - preferably with a cd so you can listen while you learn! Listen to Turkish songs on the YouTube or Turkish radio on the internet. Use the learning resources on this site and maybe make a Turkish friend to chat with on MSN! Everything helps and eventually things start to sink in. Good Luck!

I think the very first thing to learn are the ideas behind vowel harmony......you can find all the information you need in these three lessons:
http://www.turkishclass.com/grammar_vowelHarmony1.htm
http://www.turkishclass.com/grammar_vowelHarmony2.htm
http://www.turkishclass.com/grammar_vowelHarmony3.htm
I wrote a test for myself while I was learning this and you can find it here
Once you have vowel harmony sorted - or at least the concept of it - you can try and get to grips with the possessive suffixes that Turkish makes so much use of. There is a good lesson to start with:
http://www.turkishclass.com/basic_pronouns.htm
I would also suggest that you make use of the 'Practice Turkish' forum and try and construct some simple phrases and sentences. Vocabulary will come as you start doing this and look words up - you only need to learn words that you will actually use!
But if you want to test your vocabluary then I have written a learning tool for that which you can use.......although it does need lots more words adding it acts as a useful test. Feel free to make use of the test:

Many thanks - Im already feeling far more positive. I live in the Southern hemisphere so its quite difficult to find a talk to person. Found one, but with the changes in daylight savings the hours they are free are my work ones and vice versa.

Many thanks.

No problem - it is a tool I wrote to help myself learn......I am working on a way to add new words and once it is done I will be asking some people with a good knowledge of both English and Turkish to add new words so it gets better for us all
