Does anyone have any idea how long it will take to be able to understand and speak fluent turkish? When I started learning, i seemed to think it would happen over night, now im realising however much I think Ive learnt, there is still so much more to learn, it seems impossible to be able to remember all the words especially when some words are very identical. So all you fluent speakers... how long roughly?? xxxx

İt's not just learning the words you need to know all the suffixes, possessives, verb conjutations the list is never ending. However knowing the vocabulary is a good start.

There are lots of essential learning pages on this site so start with the basic and when you feel comfortable move on. Get yourself a good turkish dictionary and phrase book.

Good luck canım

it's different for everyone. some people are naturally gifted at languages, for other people it takes some time.

i wouldn't expect to be fluent in turkish overnight, though i wish i could just click my fingers and be fluent

i don't think you should put pressure on yourself to learn it quickly. there will be days when you just can't seem to get anything which can be frustrating. other days you will pick things up so easily.

just take your time and you will get there!!

kolay gelsin!

How long? difficult question but I will write from my personal experience.
Learning the grammar took me 1 and a half year (still learning though ) as for speaking, once you know the grammar very well, if you can speak turkish in your daily life everyday (that is to say you live there or have turks around) it would take you probably less than a year) but if you dont being fluent could take you several years.
Just what I think
Kolay gelsin!

yes, for speaking and listening it helps if you can practice conversation with someone that speaks turkish.

the key to conversation is also knowing vocabulary...it's good to know the grammar, but if you don't know vocabulary you can't have a conversation. which is what i am finding out now

also turkish tv and movies are good for listening to turkish.

a lot of the turkish movies i have downloaded don't have subtitles but it is forcing me to pay attention to the spoken turkish, rather than relying on reading english subtitles.

Right Gezbelle! My main problem now is that, in spite of knowing the grammar, I cant start fluent conversations because of my LACK of vocabulary! which is extremely difficult to "memorize" and apply!! (yes we all think we know but when it comes to USING turkish when WE WANT TO .... hehe ) that's another story!
It is SOOOOO frustrating!!

I agree with both you. I learned vocabulary words, grammar and all the lessons there but my problem is a constant practice. They said you have to practice it with turkish speaking person, but i got no one. I have one but he speaks chinese than turkish, and well, that's another language to learn

Evet Ayhan. Learning one's language need not be learning the language alone but also understanding the culture, tradition, customs and the geographical location of such place. I feel that when you know these, you will learn the language by heart and with strong determination because you will not only learn to love the language but you will also learn to love the people of such language whom you will talk to.
