the kids arent allowed to wear sandals at my son's middle school...insurance reasons. 'oppression' 'idividuality' or your ears are cold and want to wear a hat...or feet are hot and want to wear sandals at school or their feet will explode...whatever the reasons to wear or not to wear...every institution wants to implement a dress code that promotes the feeling or security of 'the whole classroom environment'..again, not the individual. if the classroom was painted in rainbow colors it would be a distraction to learning. it seems to me that women were oppressed at one time from getting an education. the educational system, unless private, is government <

sorry...tried to continue my thot here...
... the educational system, unless private, is government ,a sort of 'religion' in itself, dont you think? they want to increase the time kids spend away at school...extend the hours...to me that means more influence by people other than myself. fundamental and religious beliefs are established early on one would hope that removing a scarf wouldnt sway the individual from those fundamentals. anyway, thats what i feel in regards to that.

Quoting juliacernat:

while in the Netherlands it depends (i.e. girls can go to school with headscarf in the Netherlands.)

Not completely true. There are schools that allow the headscarf, there are that do not (most fundamentalist biblical ones). It means that sometimes parents cannot choose the school they want. Most islamic schools force girls and staff to wear one, even the non-muslim teachers. At almost all schools the chador is forbidden. It has been and still is a matter of heavy discussion.

I actually think it's okay to ban it some places because I happen to have met women who hated their scarf and could take it off this way.

I disagree, I think it is a shame that politics once again make changes in religious freedom. Now if they were banning all religious freedom from schools than maybe it would be fair but I am sure the ones who have tatoos or wear cruicifixes on there body or clothing would make a bigger fuss it this was taken from them. As muslims we must keep out faith within and not let others change our heart or our mind. I would like be able to choose what I wear and to whom I give praise to. Inşallah

214. Or do ye think that ye shall enter the Garden (of Bliss) without such (trials) as came to those who passed away before you? they encountered suffering and adversity, and were so shaken in spirit that even the Messenger and those of faith who were with him cried: "When (will come) the help of Allah." Ah! Verily, the help of Allah is (always) near!

The good deed and the evil deed cannot be equal. Repel (the evil) with one which is better (i.e. Allah ordered the faithful believers to be patient at the time of anger, and to excuse those who treat them badly), then verily! He between whom and you there was enmity, (will become) as though he was a close friend.} (Sura Fussilat 41:34)

at my children's schools here in southern california, usa...there are girls that do wear scarfs at school.
these they are allowed...for religious reasons. again, however, they are not allowed to wear hats otherwise!
double standard in the public schools in favor of religion attire over usual school attire. and because of the diversity of religions at these same schools...christmas holiday is now 'winter holiday'. the schools are constantly trying to accommodate for all in the best way they can.
