Yeah, I think not only Turkish parents are like that, some Asians too. Okay.. just don't stop telling your parents how much you care for them so you won't miss a lot of things. It pays to be thoughtful and loving guys. wink* wink*

Quoting erdinc: We are not Asian. |
In fact this has always been a confusing thing about Turks? Are we european, asian, middle-eastern or do we belong to nowhere?
But our ancestors have come from the middle Asia, don't know the exact date now, but more than a thousand years ago maybe. During this period till we came to Anatolia, we've mixed and changed...Not sure my history knowledge isn't quite good.

Quoting simonsays: I'm just wondering whether Turkish culture is more like these Asian cultures where they don't say 'i love you' out loud very often, or whether like Americans they say it each time they close a phone call.
If neither, please explain. |
I cannot give one answer, but maybe yes, "I love you" isn't something that's said everywhere anytime in Turkey. Let me tell my observations not only for partners but for the whole...
Girls use it more to their girlfriends maybe, but not the boys to their friends . Usually fathers don't show their love too much by saying I love you to their children in a traditional family, but especially sons are very fond of their mother. Some famous people like singers even in live show programs use "I love you mum" in front of millions... When they like a girl, maybe the first day they can use "seni seviyorum" (I even came across a boy that was just passing by me said ""I love you", just for fun ofcourse But there're some machos (I hope they're not too many) they never use these kind of love words, or anything that show their love. There're really some men like bears. However, Turks can be very romantic lovers at the same time, but I think it's more valid for young lovers. After marriage, I dont think that each ones say this sentence too much. And I think it's not a very approved thing to say " I love you" to your partner in a family gathering.
Girls usually are not the first ones that say "I love you" to the boys, they usually wait from the other side (well things are changing now).
But be sure of a one thing that Turks are always ready to love someone, they can easily start to love someone. Especially for famous people (turks concern the life of famous persons like singers, actors, or anyone on the TV). Then they easily phone a live program and say "I love you x so muchh" (sometimes even man to man). They love their unique football team and in the matches and whereever possible they say or shout "I love you x!!"
So, in fact it's really an interesting subject for Turks, showing their emotions. Because there're really some contradictions...
And is it really true that Americans close each phone call saying "I love you"? Ohhh, Americans are crazy!

I am Mexican, first generation born in America, and I have to say the same is true for many Mexicans that parents don't express their love with words by saying I love you, however, this is not true of all and times are changing. In America, yes, we close our phone calls with "I love you", but not with everyone, only with our loved ones.. Afterall, it is better to tell your loved ones you love them while they can hear it than when they die... and I know several male Turks that are very expressive with your affection and don't hesitate to say "I love you" and they are very romantic with their words... (as long as they are not in front of other males).

Hey
im aussie and I always close to my mum dad grandparents and turk bf with I love you. Its jsut something you say before you close a call....I guess it comes down to people trying to live each day and cherish each moment, what would happen if you didnt say it and then for some reason you died or they did and they never knew how u felt or you forgot to say one last thing. ...i guess thats the reason and because u jsut love them and tell them anyways.
Im curious as to the matter though of what turk bf call you in front of there parents? what is considered appropriate and what is not? And what do u call them? For ex my bf calls me askim, and i call him also however with parents I feel a little uncomfortable coz i think his mum might think im stealing him away from her and i dont want her to get upset...even though he says it to me...maybe im jsut thinking to much again

Quoting simonsays: I have read that some Asians prefer not to say things like 'i love you' to their partners because that should be obvious by their actions and saying it is diminishing it's meaning since it should be obvious.. Is this true of turkish culture? Would a Turkish girl tell her boyfriend she loves them on a regular basis or is this a Western custom that is not praticed in Turkey. Thanks for any commnets. |
ill tell it how it is ok?...
the majority of turkish guys... (sorry to be stereotypical here)... are very romantic, and love to tell their gfs that they love them... even if its not true love... they are right softies at heart... hehe despite the big, dark, macho appearance they have... hehe
and then there are some of them, who dont say it at all.. lets take my parents for eg: my father has never told my mother that he loves her within 20 years of being married to her! i personally believe that this is because when u tell someone u love them, its the maximum thing that u can say to someone.. and what do us silly humans do?? we always want more than what wev got already. so i believe that my father is actually scared that my mum will get bored of him if he tells her these magical words... so really, does love her and doesnt want her to stop loving him either... and despite the fact that it sometimes seems rather cold, i believe that he is right in a way..
at the end of the day, are words everything..? i know they mean a lot, of course they do.. but love is not only expressed with words... words can lie too... but the look in someones eyes when they look at you, the tone in their voice when they speak to you means more i think.. what they do for you... in other words... the way they actually show their love... saying it is not everything... and in fact when people just say the words to everyone they go out with, its rather annoying because i doubt its true love everytime.. and it is actually very immature, reminds me of the kids at school, going out with a different person each week, and boasting about how much theyr in love... come on guyz.. is just saying "i love you" everything??.. i think not...
