I am against capital punishment. Why? Because I think no person has the right to take the life of another person. I am not religious, but if I was I should say: people are not God, so don't act like that.
Besides, I don't believe it makes horrible crimes happen less and it is NOT comforting victims.
I have a badge (from my teenage years) which says: Why do we kill people who kill people to show that killing people is wrong?

I am against capital punishment also. In the US, the only ones who are executed are the poor. And these are the ones that do not have the resources for proper self-defense. With DNA analysis now available, it has shown that up to 25% of those tested on death row were in fact innocent of the crime they were sentenced for.

I'm not an US-administration fan that I feel the need to defense them, but to avoid bashing or one-sided views, some figures (source: nl.wikipedia.org):
China - most executions all over the world, this country by itself has executed more people than all the others together: 1770 officially in 2005, but probably 8000-10.000. Reasons: murder, smuggling drugs, trade in endangered animals and trading women.
Indonesia: some executions each year, mostly for smuggling drugs or murder.
Iran: 94 officially in 2005, but probably more. Reasons: murder, adultery, pornography, prostitution.
Japan: at least 1 in 2006. Executions take place without media attention, even family is informed after the execution.
Saudi Arabia: 86 officially in 2005, probably more.
Singapore: between 1991 and 2000 there were 340 people executed, most because of drug trading. The possession of 15 grams heroine is enough.
USA: Twelve states do not have capital punishment. In 2005 there were 60 people executed. The pro-capital punishment majority has decreased from 80% in 1994 to 64% in 2005.
Vietnam: 64 people in 2003.
The last country in Europe that abolished capital punishment is Belgium, in 1996.
Liechtenstein was the first country in the world that abolished capital punishment: in 1798.

It's wrong. I can't think of any excuse in favour of capital punishment.
Killing people, because they have killed?

Quoting vineyards: If we take that as our basis we must be against all forms of death decisions.

Though I understand your explanation I do not agree. True, I'm against capital punishment and pro-choice of abortion or euthanasia. That means I am not pro-abortion, I am pro-choice. Exactly the point why my opinion differs from your words: abortion is a choice of the woman carrying an unwanted child and euthanasia is the choice of a person about his/her own life, sometimes that decision is made decades before the point of no return. To me the difference between those 3 subjects is that two of them concern a personal choice and the other one not, reason why I don't think I should judge them all the same.
