According to the Lonely Planet there is not much to do in Rize: a museum, a tea garden and a castle is all that is mentioned. Accommodation mentioned are two hotels: Hotel Milano, double 34 euro/night and Otel Kaçkar, double 39/night (with a hammam around the back).
But you can find more info and pictures at: http://www.allaboutturkey.com/rize.htm

Hi Christine,
I just saw your post. I didn't know you were going to vist Trabazon. Yilmaz's mother and father are from Gumushane(?spelling), not far. I have looked at pictures on the internet, it seems like a beautifully magical place. I hope Yilmaz and I will visit there someday.
Have a great time!!! Hope to talk to you before you leave.

Trudy,
Thanks for the links! I also appreciate the hotels. There's a lot to explore in this region- and we don't want to rent a car when there. How did you find the dolmus routes?
thanks again,
Christine

I haven't been to Rize myself, only to Trabzon (and I will go again in a few weeks, around June 21st). Dolmus routes I just ask at the hotel, on the street or at the dolmus station. That's quite easy. (Even though I hardly speak Turkish). And if you go to Trabzon as well - from your post I concluded you would be in Rize and nowhere else - don't miss Sumela Monastery! I don't remember the company, their bus arrived at my hotel in Trabzon, but a return ticket from Trabzon to Sumela (50 minutes drive) costed last year 15 YTL. This year I will visit some mosques and churches there and I got the advice to go on a day trip to Uzungul. If you have the opportunity you must go to the Kaçkar Mountains, they are wonderful.

I went to Trabzon last year too. Dolmus are good and frequent. If you're going to arrive at Trabzon airport, you'll need to walk a little to the main road to catch a dolmus. But the towns are well connected.

Thanks for the good advice! We plan on travelling all about the Trabazon region, but are on a budget. Nine weeks of travelling is expensive! Right now we're trying to sort out affordable lodging.
Thank goodness nothing is as expensive as Istanbul!
Happy Friday,
Christine
