Do I understand correct that ıf I sent a message to 3900 saying 5yuz or 5bin, they will take 39 of my normal kontör, and I get back those credits? Thats all there is to it?

They take 39 kontör and give you one of your choice:
1. write "5yuz", send to 3900 =
You will be able to send 500 SMS to anywhere, any numbers in Turkey.
2. write "5bin", send to 3900 =
You will be able to send 5000 SMS to any AVEA numbers.

Aslında bu "bedava kontör" değil, sadece 39 kontör karşılığında "bedava mesaj" fırsatı...

Haklısın, ama ben genellikle mesaj atıyorum da, pek çok aramıyorum ben. O yüzden bana bedava gibi geliyor
Ama değiştirmişler ya! Önce 100 kontöre alana, 100 mesaj bedava falan.. şimdi 250 kontöre alana 150 mesaj bedava. Ama tüm yöne oldu Neyseee....

Could someone explain how the SMS works in Turkey? My Turkish friend here in USA said that text messaging is expensive in Turkey. I am assuming that it doesn't cost for the person in Turkey to receive sms, is that correct? What are the 'credits' that I see people running out of? If they are out of credits can they still receive messages? THanks!

No, I dont find text messaging expensive in Turkey. Especially beause both AVEA and Turkcell (two mobile phone operators) have many campains in which you can text for free or for little money.
Credits: ın Turkey you buy so called 'kontör'. You buy cards that you upload your cellphone with. For example: 250 avea kontör costs 31 YTL. 1 sms to Avea-user costs 1 kontör, talking for 10 minutes by phone costs 2 kontör. So when you finish your kontör, you cant make calls but you can still receive them, you cant send texts but you can still receive them.
Texting abroad costs 3 kontör per text for an Avea user.
