He was good. --> İyiydi.

I was successful. --> Başarılıydım

The above examples were given for making adjectives past tense

She was pretty. Guzeldi.

I dont understand the first two examples though.
Why is the significance of the Iyi + y + di
Basaril + iy + dim

What is the 'Y' for?

Can anyone please help ?? Thank YOU

the "y" is a buffer letter used to form the past tense when the stem word ends in a vowel.

the past tense was originally formed as "-idi" where a buffer letter was required to separate the vowels.

for example, the first two:
-İyiydi
-Başarılıydım

used to be written as "iyiyidi" and "başarılıyıdım".

when adding past tense suffix to 'root' or stem words such as oku which end in a vowel...there is no 'y' added. I believe this was the source of the confusion.

so, is it that 'complete' words not 'root' words that end in a vowel take the past tense suffix ydi ? Is this correct?

It seems like you are confusing verb-verbs and noun-verbs.

oku is root of a 'verb' itself.
So you need to add -di suffix for past tense.
Ex: oku-du, sakla-dı, dile-di.

To use nouns in past tense you need to convert them to a verb.
Which is done by adding i(mek) verb to the noun or adjective.
(N)Teresa +i +di -> Teresa idi -> Teresaydı. -> She was Teresa.
(Adj)İyi +i +di -> İyi idi -> İyiydi.
(Adj)Başarılı +i +di -> Başarılı idi -> Başarılıydı.

Those are only added to verb stems though, not nouns. In your case it would be "Teresa olabilecek mi?"

Yes, that's OK, like SFS said. Why do you think so? The present and past suffixes of "olmak" can be added to nouns and adjectives no problem.

Thank you. ok, so the simple present and past tenses of to be can be added to a noun

and the possessive suffix also and the subject, dative, locative and ablative suffixes. true? or are there others that can be added?

my teresa = teresa + -im (i is dropped..) = teresam

I am teresa = teresa + -im (y is added as buffer..) = teresayim

I was teresa = teresa + -ydim (y is added as changing noun to past tense to be) = teresaydim
