It means "like", or "similar to".
The object of givi goes before it:
e.g. Istanbul gibi bir şehir
A city like Istanbul
Onun gibi insanlar
People like him/her
Annem gibi beni sevenler
Those who love me like my mother

1. like: çocuk gibi like a child.
2. as if, as though: Sanki kıtlık olacakmış gibi yiyecek depo ediyorlar. They´re storing food as if there is going to be a famine.
3. like, as: Dediğim gibi yap. Do as I say.
4. as befits: İnsan gibi davranmalısın. You should behave as befits a human being.
5. (after a predicate) almost, nearly, somewhat: Bugün ateşim yok gibi. Today I have almost no fever.
