I was looking in the dictionary at "bilmek" (the verb to know) but saw an alternative usage of "to regard as"........see here
The example given is "onu düşman bildik"
But what does "onu" mean???
I understand "düşman" as enemy and "bildik" as first person plural past tense of the root verb.

onu = him/her
it means something like that "i accepted/assumed him as my enemy"

Quoting Barkin: onu = him/her
it means something like that "i accepted/assumed him as my enemy" |
Thanks for that......perhaps the site admin might take note that this is missing from the Pronouns Page!!!
It translates as "we regarded him as an enemy"
"bildik" is plural not singular (i.e. we not I)

Technically it isn't missing from the pronouns page. It is simply the personal pronoun 'O' in the accusative case.
O (him/her/it) n (buffer letter) u ( accusative noun case marker)
Hope that helps.
Also, "onu düşman bildik" can also mean "I took him for/regarded him as an enemy" in reported speech. As Turks tend to use we instead of I when reporting what was said. Without context you can't really know.
Also, I thought i'd introduce myself to the forum.
I've been learning Turkish on and off for two years. My wife is Cypriot Turkish, so I understand Turkiye Turkcesi and the Kibris dialect (which isn't too different). Sorry for not using character encoding, i'll try and do that next time

Yes - it all became clearer when I saw the noun states for pronouns laid out in the grammar book I got for xmas
Perhaps adding the states of pronouns to the lessons on this site would be a good idea???
