Sokollu Mehmet Pasha Mosque: The 16th century imperial archtitect Sinan's masterpiece, below the far end of the Hiippodrome, is famed for its superb Izmik tiles - there are fewer than at the Ruestem Pasha Mosque, but they are in perfect harmony with the arhitecture. The mosque is built on the side of a hill, which Sinan used for theatrical effect. When you arrive, enter the countyard from the front gate, where the domes of mosque and absolution fountain are beautifully framed by the arched gateway. Especially beautiful in the rain.
