What does it mean to "need the beans"?

Full of beans - means full of energy and lively
On a previous thread mylo and I were joking about things a Brit in Turkey misses. He suggested baked beans. But I said I don't really like them, and Turkish kuru fasulye are a close substitute, anyway. He was just joking about that here.
PS Baked beans also has another connotation in that they can give you gas.
