One of my favorite sounds is, strangely enough, the gas man. When I first heard the sweet tunes tinkling out of his truck as he drove around the ‘hood, I thought it had to be an ice cream truck: “Aygaz…get your sweet delicious Aygaz!â€

Hey Roswitha, what a lovely nostalgic post. I can still remember the song: Aygaz de-de-de!
For those who are newer to Turkey: we use bottled gas for certain things, and the truck loaded with bottles would drive down the streets playing his song, so you knew you could lean out of the window and shout to him to bring you a new gaz tüpü up.
I use past tense because, sadly, a lot of neighborhoods in Istanbul have banned the song due to noise pollution! The guy still drives round, but no tune any more.... I think the old days were much better!

Not banned in Fulya. You can hear the Aygaz tune several times a day with additional cries of, "suuuuuuuuu"
walk down Fulya Caddessi the next time you visit Cehavir and you can relive nostalgia...

I have a friend whose dog starts to bark and go mad every time he hears the Aygaz tune! There's another company with another tune, and when that van passes the dog just ignores it
I like it, and still hear it several times a day when I am in Istanbul.
