For practice and especially so I get a good feel for how words and suffixes are put together, I am trying to do some practice translations from Türkçe to English.......

Could someone please correct any mistakes for me!!!

Can okuldan eve geldiği sırada dışarıda şiddetli bir yağmur başlamıştı. Yemeğini yedikten sonra ödevlerini yapmaya başlamadan önce annesinden yağmuru seyretmek için biraz izin istedi. Annesi Can'a kısa bir süre izin verdi. Can da pencerenin kenarına gelip yağan yağmuru seyretmeye başladı. Sokakta şemsiyesiyle yürüyenlerden başka, şemsiyesi olmadığı için apartmanların kenarına sığınan insanlar vardı. Bir süre sonra etrafta yağmur birikintileri oluşmaya başladı. Yoldan geçen arabalar suları etrafa sıçratıyor, insanlar ıslanmamak için kenara kaçışıyorlardı. Can hemen evde olmasının ne kadar iyi olduğunu.

Can came home from school at the time it started to rain heavily outside. It was his duty to start to prepare food for his dinner but first he wanted permission from his mother to watch the rain. His mother gave Can permission for a short time. Can went to a quiet window and started watching the falling rain. There were people on the street walking with their umbellas, others took shelter at the edge of appartments because they didn't have umbrellas. After a short time the rain formed puddles nearby. Cars passing along the road splashed the water, people ran out of the way because the edge of the road got splashed with water. How much good it was that Can was in the house all the time.

Well, I can suggest one improvement.
“Yemeğini yedikten sonra ödevlerini yapmaya başlamadan önce annesinden yağmuru seyretmek için biraz izin istedi.”

I think we can translate it like this: “After the dinner he asked his mother to let him watch the rain before doing his homework”.

By the way, whom does the name “Can” refer to? A man or a woman?

Can is definately a male's name in Turkish.

kenar+ı+n+a : noun + third person singular possessive suffix 'ı' + buffer 'n' + dative case suffix 'a'

kenarına : to its side

Why do have the possessive suffix here? Because it is a noun modification. It is the side of something where that something is mentioned just before kenarı.

example:
yol kenarı : side of the road

Possessive Suffixes after a vowel
my – benim -m

examples:
my book : (benim) kitab+ım
my car: (benim) araba+m
it's colour: (onun) reng+i
Here the possessive adjectives benim, onun, (my, it's) etc. can be dropped if the stress isnt on that word.

Some people are confusing the third person singular possessive suffix with accusative case suffix. It is easy to distinguish. While after a consonant they take the same suffix, after a vowel they take different suffixes.

example:
boya: paint (the liquid you are using to paint)
boyayı: accusative case
boyası: possessive suffix

notice that the possessive suffix indicates that a possessor (or modifier) is existing.
duvar boyası : wall paint
kumaş boyası : fabric paint

On the other hand this isnt the case with the accusative case suffix:

Boyayı getir. > Bring me THE paint.
Here the paint is the direct object I'm referring to.

"Can hemen evde olmasının ne kadar iyi olduğunu..."

This sentence is uncompleted. The verb is missing. It could be like this:
"Can hemen evde olmasının ne kadar iyi olduğunu fark etti."
