Because konuşma is the direct objet of özledim.
As in turkish vowels don't go together, they put the buffer letter y in the middle to keep them apart.
So, to know the direct objet, you have to ask 'what did I miss?'. Here the answer is 'talking with you (seninle konuşma + y +ı özledim).
You can also see it in "Seni özledim" (sen + i özledim).
I hope it helps.

Do you mean the direct object? If so, no, you use it when you talk about a definitive object.
In turkish there's no article, so objects are undefined. If you talk about a defined one, you use the direct object (or also called accusative case).
Example:

- Bardak ver. (Give me a glass)
- Bardağı ver. (Give me the glass)
