Whilst this is true - there would be nobody to observe it 
I am struggling with how "olurdu" is comprised......
It seems to be a mix between aorist and simple past tense :-S
Sort of a cross between:
olur and oldu

Is it constructed as follows:
ol-malı-y-dı = verb stem + neccesitative tense + fusion consonant + 3rd person simple past tense
How is olmalıydı constructed???

İnsanlar yeni takvim yazardılar.
Ve 24 saat boyunca Güneşâ€™i 30 kere görürdüler.
Bitkiler daha hızlı büyürdü.
İnsanların ise her 15 dakika ışıklar açmaya ve kapatmaya ihtiyacı olurdu

Olmak – to be
Olmalı – it should be, it must be. The suffix “malı, meli†is used to create the obligative meaning, e.g.
Gitmeli – he/she has to go
Yapmalıyım – I have to do (smth), etc.
Olmalıydı – it should have been (or, I think, “it had to be). So we added the past tence suffix “dıâ€.

So I had split the verb up correctly - I had just misinterpretted the necessitative tense suffix
