Quoting vineyards:

When I was serving my military duty in Narlidere, Izmir, I learned that there are lots of wild boars in the mountains on the Aegean coast. (Like everywhere in Turkey). We were marching to somewhere as a group of 30 or so soldiers then we came accross with a flock of boars about as many as we were. They stopped somewhere further up from where we were on the dirt road that we were climbing. As there was no going back we had to face the animals. We didn't have any rifles or weapons and were completely unprotected if the animals decided to charge us.

I intinctively began picking up some rocks and some others found some sticks. Then we saw the sergeant running to us calling us idiots yelling you can't scare a boar with rocks or sticks. We learned that even a bullet from a pistol would not penetrate its thick hide and here we are talking about 30 boars with razor sharp teeth.

We saw the same boars back in the barracks a few days later. The soldiers who lived with them for years have kind of domesticated those wild boars and they regularly visit their premises for free food.

Boars can be dangerous, particularly when they are in a pack like you mentioned. So, what would one do if they started to attack? Actually, I've heard we have wild boars around here too. I've never seen them, and don't want to.

Are there any dangerous snakes of spiders in Turkey?

Ouh! You have some scary creatures!!! I love boars, but Alemeda, I don't know where you live, but I am NEVER visiting you!!!!!

We dont have ANY dangerous creatures where I live - not even Dudus lol lol lol

Really, no dangerous creatures at all! Well AEnigma III, you might come to my area, it's very touristic. I'm in San Francisco, CA. In the city proper, it's not probable you would meet a bear, but any of the other things I mentioned you could very well meet.

I didn't mention Ocean Beach, the under tow there is very dangerous. People get swept out to sea in a pretty regular schedule. If you ever visit, follow the advice of the signs. We also have jelly fish too, forgot to mention them.

Black widow spiders make you sick, but they don't' kill. The Brown Recluse spider is pretty new to the area, and I know at least 5 people who have been bitten by them. They make a really horrible mess when they bite. Look before you sit, shake things out before you put them on. Particularly if you set things, like your shoes and socks on the floor.
Rattlesnakes all over CA, even in the city. It's not likely you would ever see one in the city, but I did. Just look where you step, don't stick your hands in dark places fast. Shake your garments, shoes and socks out before you put them on.
In the country, not at all far from the city cougars have attacked joggers. Like all cats, their instincts are to chase running things. It is not a regular event though. The cougar are beautiful animals.
We don't have large bears in the city, but in the mountain areas they exist. Like I said, I have friends who had them enter their homes. They now have nice bear rugs. Of course, there are also Grizzly Bears in really mountain areas. Now that is a serious bear! I've never seen one, and don't want to. In fact the only bear I've ever seen were ones made into rugs, but I know they are around and avoid those areas....

Turkish nationalists are the most dangerous creatures in Turkey nowadays lol

I think the terrorist PKK creature is most dangerous creature in turkey. It is their actions that bring out the nationalism in the Turks.

If you were to come to where I live, I could warn you about dangerous critters that live here. Things like Black Widow spiders, Brown Recluse spiders, scorpions, bears, mountain lions, bobcats, ticks, rattlesnakes, stingrays, deadly mushrooms and sharks. That's all I can think of in my area now When one goes to foreign areas they don't know what to look for.

I stepped on a rattlesnake once, and have numerous friends who have been bitten by brown recluse spiders (it's really quite a horror) and I know people who have shot large bears that entered their homes. In the Western US, I know to keep my eyes and ears alert for rattlesnakes and the other creatures. In other parts of the USA are the deadly poisonous cottonmouth, copperhead snakes.

What dangerous critters are in Turkey and where are they?

Take a look at my Turkey photos! The most dangerous thing I came across in the mountains was a few piles of bear droppings, a herd of cattle and a puppy that insisted on biting my backside and anyone else's who he thought was game!! (that photo has still to be put on the site!) There are brown bears in the mountains, but as far as I am aware there are no real dangerous animals, not like your impressive list anyway

Turkey obviously is a huge country with much of it mountainous. It has a variety of snakes, spiders and insects. Also there are different sizes of cats, coyotes and wolves. Bears? I don't know. Lets not forget about the jellyfish in the bogas waters. They can leave quite a sting.

Yes, jelly fish do leave a nasty sting (silent but deadly ) and then of course the wolves, surround their vulnerable pray and attach.

When we are staying with my husbands family in the Nazilli area him and his family are always worried about wild dogs (I guess wolves) and jackels. Everynight the livestock needs looked after at night.

Here in Texas...well, you know...everything is bigger in Texas!!! HAHAHA When I first moved here from the north eastern part of the US, I was horrified at the the size of the insects and the fact that if you walk outside you have to be aware of your surroundings because of the snakes and scorpions. Well, it's been nine years and nothing horrible has crossed my path!! Thank God!

Tell me more about the types of sharks in Turkey. Dog fish (kopegi baluk) I think they are called in Turkish? I went swimming all across the southern coast from Dalaman to Side, Cem said the water is the wrong temperature for sharks. Hmmmm, I think he was full of it, but I have heard salinity and temperature can effect what type and whether sharks hang out in certain waters...but for the water to be devoid of them? Are there many shark attacks in Turkey like there are in Florida, California and Australia?
