I have just learnt that Washoe,unique chimpanzee, which lived almost 40 years in captivity died.Have always been fascinated with her life since the moment I learnt about her existence as a linguist, as Washoe knew a sign language and had a range of vocabulary of 3 year old kid.Moreover not only she taught this language her 3 companions but also was able to joke.

Yes, I read about her demise as well. I think we humans greatly over estimate our capabilities.

It's more, we don't understand them. Look at dolphins, whales and other animals...bees....ants...they most definitely are able to communicate....and quite well too.
