AYAZMA and MOUNT IDA (KAZDAĞI)
Ayazma is on the lower slopes of Mount Ida in the district of Bayramiç, 5 km along the road after the village of Evciler. With its tall trees peculiar to Mount Ida, its bubbling coll- flowing waters and idyllic picnic spots, it is one of the most beautiful excursion places in the province. Every year in August the traditional Mount Ida Beauty Contest is organized at Ayazma, recreating the famous event from mythology. There is a moving legend told about Mount Ida, the setting for many mythological events during the Trojan War. In the village of Güre near Edremit lived a beautiful, kind, fair-haired girl called Sarıkız. But as a result of malicious gossip about Sarıkız, her father could bear the innuendo and rum ours no longer and abandoned Sarıkız with 5-10 geese up on Mount Ida. After many years had passed, the father went to see his daughter. When they met, he asked for water to perform his ablutions. Sarıkız filled his bowl with water by extending her hand form the top of the mountain down to the Gulf of Edremit far below and the father realized at that point that his daughter had attained saintliness. Just after this miraculous event had taken place and its significance understood, Sarıkız died. Her father, greatly grieved at this, also gave up his life, on a different hilltop. According to this tale, Mount (Kazdağı, meaning 'Geese Mountain') has as its summit Sarıkız Peak while the place where her father died is remembered as Baba Da (Father Peak
