How does not wasting food solve the problem? Are you going to send all the spare food to a famine stricken country? 
We should all definitely eat less but you would do better to campaign against third world debt, unfair trade agreements and donate money to established charities like Oxfam who help these areas develop irrigation systems and provide grain and seed for them to farm themselves. Unfortunately the sad fact is that many of these countries are the victims of their governments who do not allow aid to get through to those who need it.
Bear in mind ALWAYS, that WE (the developed, rich countries) are the ONLY cause of famine.
