I am not sure that it is even recognized as a crime in Turkey. Maybe someone will know for sure.

I think it is a crime in Turkey but that does not stop anyone in any country!

I believe it is actually zero tolerance, but if caught it depends who you are and how much money you have on you! I was told that you get sent to prison, but he meant as in remand (as in the UK a night in the cells to sober up) and then get fined. Not sure if they lose their licence as happens in the UK.

Off topic; I knew someone here in the states who got a DUI on a bicycle. I have a feeling Turkey is much more lenient with this.. I do know they have AA all over the world including Turkey...

I can only tell you my experience. My fiance and I were driving back from Taksim. I was driving. It was about 3 a.m. I only had 3 beers. There was a check point set up and the police motioned for us to pull over. Needless to say, I was very scared. They administered a breathalizer (my first ever). Everything was okay, which I thought it would be since it was 3 beers over a couple of hours, but it was still unnerving. I turned to my fiance and asked what would have happened if I was drunk, would I have gone to jail. He said, "yes". So I guess, if caught, you would face the same type of punishment in countries that have drunk driving laws.

Laws are quite tough if you get caught.
If you are involved in an accident a breath test is routine, even if it is early in the morning! I was in a smash, and the police didn't have their little machine, so I had 2 hours to go to a local hospital, get a breath test done and then take it down the local police station.
To add to the confusion, unlike Britain, blood alcohol limits in Europe are not necessarily fixed at one level. In Turkey, the 0.5 per mg limit only applies to compact vehicles without passengers - if you are carrying a passenger, the limit drops to zero. In Germany, the 0.5mg law is reduced to 0.3 per mg if you are arrested for another traffic offence. Drivers in Spain, who have held a licence for less than two years, must obey a reduced 0.1mg limit.
Here is some advice given to UK tourists going to Turkey:
"To add to the confusion, unlike Britain, blood alcohol limits in Europe are not necessarily fixed at one level. In Turkey, the 0.5 per mg limit only applies to compact vehicles without passengers - if you are carrying a passenger, the limit drops to zero. It is also worth remembering that in many European countries, the police do not need probable cause to stop a vehicle and breathalyse the driver as they do here in the UK. Random checks are permitted in many places. And if you are caught driving over the drink drive limit, penalties vary but at the top end of the spectrum jail terms can be as much as three years."
