Quoting kali20:

gelmekteyim: I am currently in the act of coming

closest English is like "I am on my way"

geliyorum: I am coming

Maybe the following examples can explain the difference.

If one person has arrived at the cinema, and calls their friend to see where they are then both of these may be given as the answer:
Geliyorum: I'm coming
Gelmekteyim: I'm coming

But in answer to the question are you coming to Turkey this year you would only use
geliyorum: I'm coming
unless you were actually on the bus/ferry/plane at the time the Q was asked!

-mekte is generally same as -(i)yor continuous tense. But it is not used much. it is used generally in stories with -dir suffix

If a man replies the question "What are you doing?'"
with,

1. GELIYORUM, it means that he is in the act of coming straight over, with no planned intermediate stops in between,
2. GELMEKTEYIM, it also means that he is on his way, but implies that there are intermediate stops (secondary chores, stopovers etc.) in between.
