from Turkish Daily News ...

Driver shot after chase
Tuesday, November 27, 2007

'A driver was shot by police in the back of the neck late Sunday during a chase in the Aegean city of İzmir, with the police officer in question taken into custody, the Doğan news agency reported.

The police officer argued that he had fired warning shots at the jeep driven by a 20-year-old. The officer that shot the driver is in custody, while the other was released after questioning.

A law that took effect last March, giving police the right to use a gun to stop a suspect leads to those kind of events, said Lütfullah Demirkapı, the head of Human Rights Association's (İHD) İzmir branch.

“Laws are for people's happiness, not for destroying people,” Demirkapı said.

The incident comes only days after two police officers in civilian attire in Istanbul were dispatched to a park where two men were drinking beer, with one of the officers allegedly kicking one of the men in the chest, resulting in the man's death.

In the incident in İzmir, the person who was shot at did not heed police calls for him to stop, instead driving off to evade them. It was reported that the driver's license was revoked after he was caught driving while inebriated twice.

The car the victim was traveling in stopped after a 15-minute chase when it crashed into a tree. The driver was traveling with two friends, who were not injured and admitted they had consumed alcohol that night.

Reports said the driver was in coma.

Demirkapı said they had warned the authorities about the law that increased police powers.'

I could understand if this man was shotting at the police or threatening other people in some way. I could at least understand the use of force.....but this is extremely excessive as the story is told in the Turkish Daily News. I am wondering if there is more to the story - hopefully there is and this wasn't just an act of aggression by the very people who are sworn to protect the public.

What you say is absolutely right, MrX67....but unfortunately it seems hard to convince a lot of people of it!

Maybe I am a little more pesimistic, MrX67. My experience has proved to me that many humans are very violent and not much better than animals. Of course, most people are decent and good, but you can't deny that evil exists in the world.

i agree Elisabeth, not easy to believe how come an innocent, pure and loving baby turn as a monster in time, sure there r planty reasons of that and i think main quilities who has the power or dynamics of the societies in their hands (politicans, intellectuals, richs, artists, media bosses etc, weapon traders etc..)never innocent crowdeds and thats a big paradox to bad minority playing with good majority just for their selfish aims..And i believe that damn capitalist realities killing all humanly feelings fastly...
