Foca is a cute little town on the Aegean Sea coast and is also famous for its Mediterranean seals from which it takes its name. There is old and new Foça, and the ancient city of Phokaia is located between the two Foças. Phokaia is one of the 12 Ionian cities and its name was mentioned in Homer's epic “The Odyssey.” The first inhabitants of old Foça were immigrants from Greece around the ninth century B.C.

According to the historian Herodotus, Phocaeans were good sailors and traveled long distances with fast ships with a capacity of 500 passengers.

Archeological excavations in Foça started in the early 1900s and several monuments from the Archaic, Hellenic and Roman periods including the remains of Temple of Athena and Sanctuary of Cybele, the Great Mother Goddess of the Phrygians in Anatolia, an open-air theater, castle, mosaics, fragments of ceramics and pottery etc have been unearthed. Some of the findings are currently on display at the İzmir Archaeological Museum.

Just North of Foca is Aliaga...Beautiful diving and small scale fishing spot.

PS: You can actually taste sweetwater while you are under the sea. There are natural underwater springs.

Foça is a nice town, for people who likes a a peace of mind. Walking along the shore, seeing the fisherman boats returning ...

I also like to drink turkish coffee in Kozbeyli village. If you go to Foca visit Kozbeyli.

I will definitely recommend foca as well. I have been there several times. Lovely beautiful place with beautiful old greek houses.
Not far away from Izmir, not baking hot during summer. Perfect!!

I have spent so much time in Foca and Aliaga. What a great little fishing village. It was our second construction site here (Aliaga) so I think I have eaten at every cafe in Foca and Yenifoca at least a dozen times. Not too touristy as its off the beaten trail. If 5 star accomodations is your preference, the Phokia is a great all inclusive hotel in Foca. And when the village life was too slow, Izmir was less than an hour by car away. Great memories !!

Indeed lovely idyllic place.. And ofcourse I can recommend a city trip to İzmir

Also, from Foça its not so far to Bergama, which is also really worth seeing.

I havent spent a holiday or several days in Foça, but we passed it several times and it is really a beautiful fisher village.

A friend of mine has a summer house there which I hope to visit this summer.

Foça may be a peaceful place most of the time but a 2 year old Scottish child was shot dead there 3 years ago after being caught in a gun battle crossfire. Another turkish man died in the incident.
