Manavgat College, Antalya, has presented an 8-year-old student from England with a medal in recognition of her success in learning to read and write Turkish in a short time.
The directors of Manavgat College Primary School awarded medals to Bethany Amber Rice along with 26 Turkish students, who also excelled in reading and writing in Turkish, within the context of the school's reading days at the end of November.
Bethany attended the award ceremony with her parents, Steven and Marianne Rice. After receiving her reward, the first grader embraced her teacher, Ümran Ekim, exclaiming "Canım öğretmenim!" (my dear teacher).
Mr. Rice spoke about the family's move from East Anglia in England to Turkey a year ago. "We're not thinking of returning, so we'll be learning Turkish as a family." He explained that Turks' hospitality and friendliness were the two most important reasons behind their decision to settle in the country. "We are happy because our daughter learned Turkish in just three months. Bethany also shares what she learns in school with us, helping our Turkish develop as well," he said proudly.
Mehmet Alp, co-administrator of Manavgat College, stated that there are 22 foreign students in the school from countries including Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Switzerland and South Africa. "We are proud of Bethany's success because she achieved proficiency in Turkish reading and writing in such a short period of time," said Alp. He added that the school's administrators visit the homes of foreign students, consulting with their parents and providing them with information about Turkish traditions and culture.
