The two highly anticipated Turkish movies of this season, "Kabadayı" (Tough Guy) and "Beyaz Melek" (The White Angel), are contributing positively to surging box office figures for Turkish movies, giving the industry a final boost ahead of the year's end.
"Kabadayı," starring veteran actor Şener Şen and heartthrob Kenan İmirzalıoğlu in its leading roles and centered around the story of two hard men who come to blows over a young woman, has managed to lure over 920,000 moviegoers in the 10 days since it opened in theaters around Turkey on Dec. 14. The film's producers, Filmacass and Fida Film, said the figure marked the 2007 record for a Turkish movie's first 10 days following its opening.
Meanwhile "Beyaz Melek," the first directing effort by arabesque singer Mahsun Kırmızıgül, who at first received dubious reviews from film critics, has sold 1,503,214 tickets in the 40 days since it opened on Nov. 16. The film, which also opened in 60 foreign movie theaters in Germany, Britain, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Denmark and France, reached a box office figure of 246,000 across Europe during the same period, the Anatolia news agency reported. Starring Kırmızıgül along with veterans including Arif Erkin, Erol Günaydın, Gazanfer Özcan, Nejat Uygur and Yıldız Kenter, "Beyaz Melek" follows the story of two Eastern youths whose father comes down with cancer, as a result of which they find themselves in a rest home.
