Inspired by Andrew Finkels column in the newspaper today where he chooses Hrant Dink as his Man or Woman of the Year in Turkey

I thought it would be revealing to see who TC members think deserves the award this year.

Rules: Someone from Turkey, not a TC member

My vote: Şemsa Aydın and Susanne Geske, the two ladies widowed in Malatya, who were publically quoted as asking God to forgive the men who murdered their husbands.

I am also opening a separate thread for votes for TC member of the year and Dudu of the year.

I guess nobody could think of anyone despite their professed interest in all things Turkish

To my mind, if Hrant Dink wasnt murdered... not many of the people in Turkey would be having the chance to know him actually... if he had done really great things... i am sure he would be more well known before his dead..
i am totally sad about his being murdered but he cant be the man of the year...

i will think about who will deserve this honor...

It is a good intention to begin this thread, thank you Marioninturkey and I am looking forward to reading about all the great things Turkish people have achieved or demonstrated, whoever they are.

A great idea for a thread: to celebrate, with grace and pride, all the positive aspects of Turkey.

To me those who deserve the title Citizen of the Year are those unsung heros, people from obscure backgrounds, that do not necessarily make the headline news, who do tremendous good, go beyond their own boundaries of bravery or achieve something extraordinary.

As I do not know of too Turks to whom this deserving award should go to, I award our "Muleteer" who treked with us in the Kackar Mountains, with his mule. Yes he was paid for his time, but what a nice characture he was, and his life is in the mountains. I will always remember that little man.

Quoting libralady:

Well said Libralady. In the UK there is an awards ceremony held every year to celebrate such achievements and I'm sure this also happens in many countries. but I think Marioninturkey's nominees:

"My vote: Şemsa Aydın and Susanne Geske, the two ladies widowed in Malatya, who were publically quoted as asking God to forgive the men who murdered their husbands."

are worthy, not because they are on any particular "side" but simply because they found it within themselves to step out of the box and be so gracious. I'm not taking anyone's side by saying this I'm merely commenting on the actions of two women who suffered a terrible loss.
