Yapmak = To do
Yapmamak = Not to do
Yapamamak = Not to be able to do
You need to take off the -mak which is the infinitive ending "to...."
Because it is past tense, we use -di
Because it is we, we then add k
Yapamadık = We were not able to do or We couldn't

if we say"we didnt chat today" then it will be
" chat YAP-MA-DIK.> verb+negative+tense"
when "we say we COULDnt chat" then it will be
chat YAP-A-MA-DIK the only -A- here gives the meaning ability, rest is the same above
