A few words about the artist...

ATANUR DOGAN was recently selected as one of the five best artists in the world by the Portrait Society of Canada in Toronto and has been invited to demonstrate at the 2004 International Portrait Arts Festival as their best watercolour artist.

ATANUR's portraits reflect an acute awareness of character. His work is distinguished by a unique rendering of his subject's face and hands. His strong and determined use of dark colours with spots of light and a liberal use of water are both risky and extraordinary for a watercolorist but he achieves amazing results. It is these abilities and techniques, in particular that make his paintings so appreciated and valuable.

Awards:
1989-The Ankara Governor's Award

1994-North Vancouver Competition Achievement Award and Display in Lonsdale Quay

2004-He was selected as "The Best Watercolour Portrait Artist in the world" and awarded first prize by the Portrait Society of Canada.

Dear Sophie

Thank you so much for introducing us to work of this extraordinary artist. Looking his amazing paintings it's not difficult to understand why did he win all those valuable awards.

Every face from his painting tells its own story, thank you for letting us hear them

Really nice indeed. Actually, when it comes to portraits, I prefer the pictures instead of the paintings.

That reminds me, does anyone remember the picture of the girl on the cover of National Geographic magazine many years ago? That picture has been published all over the world. It was a girl with the most beautiful eyes.
After many years, the photographer went back to see if he could find the girl (woman by then) again, and he did.
Gonna see now if I can find the picture somewhere

Ohh i remember that picture so well indeed. It's really touching. I've made a presentation of World Press Photos taken in Africa last year. They have annual books, i really recommend them, they are so beautiful. Especially the stories behind them.

But they are very shocking as well.

They are beautiful. However, it made me wonder something. How do Turkish muslims react to such portraits? I always understood that paintings of "live beings" were forbidden in Islam? Is this true?
