Milliyet News - Pitbulls out of control

Before you click on this link, be warned that there are some rather distressing photos of a cat being mauled.

Shouldn't the government introduce laws that see the removal of Pitballs in Turkey ?

It is very clear that so many young (teenagers/20's) people have pitbulls almost as a sign of status. I think this is lethal, Pitbulls are fighting machines in my opinion and I am a self-confessed dog lover Kopek hasta var !!!! Also, I think that many pitbull owners are not aware of the dangerous and do not know how to handle pitbulls - Just Look at the Photos on the link to see the face of the owner - she hasn't a clue !!!

Pitbull's jaws lock in the bite position and cannot be released. This means that anything being attacked by a pitbull - a cat, a child or even an adult, cannot unlock the bite to fight off the animal. Pitbulls just hold on and rattle you.

What do you think ?

IF ANY OF THE INFORMATION IS WRONG, PLEASE PLEASE CORRECT ME - I AM NOT AN ENCYCLOPEDIA !!!!

I had a girlfriend who owned a pit bull and he was a very sweet dog. I have no doubt he would have defended Patty or me to the death if we had ever been attacked but otherwise he was extremely well-behaved.

Any dog can be trained to be mean and most large dogs can be dangerous. A Kangal dog, for instance, that had been raised improperly could be as dangerous as any pit bull.

Hello Dave T. I used to feel the same and have always thought that dog owners should be held responsible not the dog. But it seems that pitbulls are different in some instinctive way that other breeds. I hope that is not ture because it would mean that many pitbulls were exterminated without reason.

However, you are totally right when you say that any dog can be dangerous. Too true.

The problem is, I feel, is that your have more awareness of these issues in the UK. But here in Turkey, we do not. Maleseef !!!

Hi Roswitha - thanks a lovely dog there on your youtube link !
My husband says if we ever are lucky enough to own a big garden, we will have a Kangal. But did you know that, apparantly, they do fall in love with their owners and will often become very sick if left with other people while the owner goes away on holiday. That is why they say that should you decide to get a Kangal, you should rear it from a puppy with the friend or neighbour regularly taking turns to feed it, so when the owner does go away on holiday, the Kangal will accept food from the other person it knows.

Vow..
I used to have two kangals (I named them surgun-male- and gypsy) in the past..They are lovely and beautiful dogs. That is true, they are so attached to their owners. And they are enourmous too..
Unfortunately they both died tragically.. The day they died, I went to a field (so nobody could see me ) and I cried for them.

I can well believe you did cry !!! Just a shame you had to do it where no-one could see you - and that no-one comforted you. When I lost my black labrador, she was 11 years old. we had had her since 7 weeks old. she was loyal and beautiful and I remember me, my mum and my dad all crying our hearts out for days !!!

Unlike humans, dogs seem to love you 100%. They don't care what happened at work, what people think, what you eat, or what you wear - EVERYTIME you come home, they are overwhelmed to see you, wagging their tales and jumping up at you as if they had not seen you for month when in fact you were only gone 1 hour !!! Lovely animals. a man's best friend is his dog !

Pit bulls scare me...you are right about their jaws.

I'm amazed this happened in Turkey as Turks love cats. Some breeds are more dangerous than others, Pit Bulls are one of them. They really have to be trained very carefully. Perhaps some type of license that prohibits ownership of them without proper training, of both dogs and owners is in order?
