Ahhh thanks I'm going in a couple of weeks to see an Aussie friend there and some others so I'm looking forward to that I have been told it's a bit of a strange place to go to instead of Istanbul but I went there loads last year so want a bit of a change! And when I mentioned to some Turkish guys at uni that I was going there, their reaction was one of "right......why???" I'll have a good time just to spite them now

I love Ankara way more than Istanbul. Life seems different there, probably because there are fewer tourists Pubs, restaurants and cafes are best there! I'm sure you'll have lots of fun!

I love Ankara too. I think I prefer it over Izmir (I cant speak for Istanbul, yet, but I dont think I would enjoy living there all my life, I would probably see it as a stop just in between), the life isnt as chaotic and dirty as in Izmir. I loved the bars there as well, and just the whole atmosphere in the city!
Ankara may not have the 'physical beauty' as much as Istanbul and Izmir, with their locations near sea, with green mountains. But to say it is not beautiful (I heard many people sya that :-S) is really a misconception. You just have to know where to go!

Local patriotism, huh?
Quoting bjk: So what place to people recommend that I ask to see there? |
There's a nice walking area whose name I have forgotten. It's in Kizilay (right in the centre with nice statues). And don't miss to see Ataturk's Mausoleum. Whatever people think of him, he was an important person to Turkish culture so I'd recommend paying him a visit - just be prepared for metal detectors). Then you should definitely see Museum of Anatolian Civilisation and Ankara's Castle. Oh, and have a drink in Atakule - on top there's a nice bar
